Mr. Harvey -Even as the villain, flashbacks are used to conjure sympathy for Mr. Harvey. They are used to expose his disturbing/traumatic childhood and force the reader to see him as once innocent and more human. p188- 189, p97 With these flashbacks we must consider Mr. Harvey as a victim and his own inability to deal with loss and grief, (like Jack Salmon they both ostracize themselves from society). 3. NAMES OF CHARACTERS Susie Salmon -shortened name -establishes notion of familiarity between reader and Susie -creates intimacy. It is an endearing, cute, can be connected with innocence and purity. The name highlights her age and how Susie will never grow up = sympathy. Established from very outset of book, therefore relationship established from outset -no change. Lindsey Salmon -Name never changes, it is resolute, tough, constant -like Lindsey. As the name cannot be shortened or changed, neither can the events that have taken place in her life she must learn to deal with them. Abigail Salmon -throughout the novel she undergoes an identity crisis -Susieââ¬â¢s death raises questions about Abigailââ¬â¢s identity -her name thus changes a number of times to reflect this. She is ââ¬ËMomââ¬â¢, ââ¬ËAbigailââ¬â¢ and at one point completely nameless when she is the most confused about her actions. P42, 152, 62 For Abigail, when there is a change of name there is a change in her character. Mr. Harvey Susie refers to him as Mr. Harvey -irony as he does not deserve the title and respect. Also creates distance between him and character -reinforces his ostracism. Name is simple -contrasts to his complicated life. Name is generic anyone could be a murderer, he camouflages himself in the disguise of a generic name. Only referred to as George Harvey by Len Fernmen and in childhood flashbacks supposed to show human side to him, see him as a victim to Jackââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"madââ¬â¢ accusations and sad childhood. The Lovely Bones Essay Example The Lovely Bones Paper How does Sebold use representations of speech and other literary techniques to portray the character of Grandma Lynn in the following extract and in one other extract in the novel? In The Lovely Bones, Grandma Lynn plays a key role in reconnecting the Salmon family following Susieââ¬â¢s death. Throughout the novel, Sebold and uses a variety of different literary techniques to portray her character to the reader. The extract is the scene where Lynn is first introduced, which Sebold uses to give a first impression of Lynn as a character, and the other extract I shall be looking at is where Sebold develops Lynnââ¬â¢s relationship with Lindsey, where she helps her find an outfit from Susieââ¬â¢s wardrobe. Sebold uses Lynn to change the mood of the family, Lynn is shown to use colloquial language when talking to her family. Lynn says that she will ââ¬Å"just run out to the front hall and get my bag oââ¬â¢ magicâ⬠, the ââ¬Å"bag oââ¬â¢ magicâ⬠referring to her make-up bag. Sebold shows the reader that she changes the atmosphere within the family. In contrast to this, in the other extract she tells Lindsey that Abigail is ââ¬Å"a wreckâ⬠, as if provoking Lindsey into conversation. Sebold uses to show the reader that as well as making a scene relaxed and humorous, she also is able to use colloquial language to talk about difficult, sensitive issues with the family. Lynn is characterised by Sebold through her excessive vanity, obsessed with the idea of beauty she does not reply to Abigailââ¬â¢s comment regarding her looks and immediately jumps into conversation regarding Jack and his suspicions. Later in this scene she then pressurises Abigail into letting her ââ¬Å"do a makeoverâ⬠, and when Lindsey asks Lynn to teach her about makeup, Sebold shows Lynn to be rejoiced about this by saying ââ¬Å"My God in heaven, praise the Lord, yes! â⬠. The use of exclamatives emphasises her vanity, as the reader can see her excitement in being able to teach her granddaughter about makeup. This also shows the reader the relationship she has with her family ââ¬â her daughter is reluctant to let her get anywhere near her with ââ¬Å"those instruments of tortureâ⬠, which indicates that it may have happened to her previously with disastrous consequences, however her granddaughter is willing to do undergo this, to encourage Lindseyââ¬â¢s transformation from a teenager into a woman. This is reiterated when Lynn helps Susie find an outfit, where Lynn attempts to find Susie a ââ¬Å"nice outfitâ⬠from her wardrobe. The idea of looks and appearance begins to rub off on Lindsey, who says that she ââ¬Å"needs to look prettyâ⬠, an ideology closely followed by Lynn. Sebold also shows Lynn to be a frequent drinker, with her dependence on alcohol shown throughout the novel. As soon as she is introduced she is shown to drink excessively as she says ââ¬Å"no one has to tell me where the liquor is! â⬠The use of exclamatives in this sentence emphasises the idea that she has visited the Salmon family before, and that she drank excessively then. This can be seen as an ââ¬Ëinside jokeââ¬â¢ between the family. However, Sebold emphasises the point that she is dependent when she says to Jack ââ¬Å"we need some stiff drinksâ⬠. The pronoun ââ¬Å"weâ⬠is used to draw the attention away from herself, to make it look like she isnââ¬â¢t the only one who wants a drink. Lynnââ¬â¢s lexical choices also enhance her alcoholism, as Sebold uses the adjective ââ¬Å"stiffâ⬠to describe how she wants the drinks to be strong, to help cope with the memorial. Sebold portrays Lynn as a very dominant character through the relationships she has with her family. When talking to others she controls the conversation through the use of interrogatives and through this is able to bring up sensitive areas with the family. She asks Abigail ââ¬Å"how is he? â⬠when Jack has left the room, and when he returns quickly drops conversation with ââ¬Å"butâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ . This ellipsis shows the reader how, although dominative, she is also sensitive to her family and does not want to upset anybody. This is shown again in the other extract where Lynn tells Lindsey ââ¬Å"You are prettyâ⬠, which shocks both Lindsey and Susie as Lynn rarely gives out compliments. Lynn is shown to be a very caring member of the family, despite being somewhat flawed, and the way that she impacts upon the family after she has arrived shows that she plays a key role in the novel. Through her use of colloquial language, Sebold shows us that she is able to change the atmosphere of each scene, from humorous to very serious, and the varied sentence structures that Sebold uses portrays Lynnââ¬â¢s views and opinions, and structures her character.

The Top Skill Youll Need to Grow Your Career
The Top Skill Youll Need to Grow Your Career When you think of leaders, ââ¬Å"empathyâ⬠might not be the word that comes to mind first. Yet many companies find that developing a more intuitive connection with their employees and customers is improving their bottom lines. Companies that respond to needs (rather than demographics alone) are able to focus on providing a service, rather than just a product. Itââ¬â¢s not about the touchy-feely notions of empathy that we often see, but rather perceptiveness. This is just as relevant within a companyââ¬â¢s walls. Employees who show emotional intelligence and empathy are often promoted and recognized because they deliver what the company (or customers) want. These are life skills that can be fine-tuned into helpful business skills.Hereââ¬â¢s how to apply a more empathetic bent to your career growth.Anticipate workplace needsThis doesnââ¬â¢t mean you should fetch coffee for your boss. But you should look at your projects and goals- what are they supposed to achieve? Wh at service do they provide to your boss, your team, your company?Ask for feedbackAsk your manager for a progress report of sorts, or set up a time to talk about your progress on a particular goal. Use your annual performance review to ask questions, and go in-depth on what youââ¬â¢re doing well and what you can change for the coming year. Try and eat healthier (and make sure to include fruits and vegetables!) so your body gets the vitamins and minerals it needs to fight things off. And stay hydrated!2. Get Some SleepYouââ¬â¢re working overtime and the time off you do have is full of holiday activity. Make sure to rest as much and as well as you can so you donââ¬â¢t have to lose work time or play time.3. Be Travel SmartStay hydrated and boost your vitamin intake. Carry Airborne or Zicam or Emergen-C and a packet of sanitizing wipes on planes and trains and buses so you donââ¬â¢t pick up any germs.4. Be Vi gilantStart to get a sniffle or a sneeze? Feel a little achy? Stop what youââ¬â¢re doing and take care of yourself. Take your vitamins, get some rest, drink lots of fluids. Use hand sanitizer often. Get a humidifier. If youââ¬â¢re proactive enough, you can head the flu off at the start.5. Get CleanClean your kitchen and bathroom regularly. But donââ¬â¢t forget to also sanatize the things you carry with you, like your cell phone or your keys. A few disinfectant wipes will do a lot of good in fending off the army of germs. And if you do get sick, remember to change your toothbrush.6. Be an EnforcerYouââ¬â¢re a nurse, so youââ¬â¢re a hand washing and sanitizing pro. But the rest of your family probably isnââ¬â¢t. Get on your soapbox and make sure everyone you love is following the same guidelines. No sick people preparing food! Use tissues to sneeze! Wash hands after coughing! Trial of Galileo Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
Trial of Galileo - Essay Example He started studying for priesthood, but the scientific inkling in him did not allow him to become a priest. He left the course and instead joined a medical degree course at the University of Pisa. But he could never complete the degree and instead started studying mathematics with Ostilio Ricci, the mathematician of the Tuscan court. The genius in him kept bubbling with enthusiasm and at the age of nineteen Galileo had discovered isochronism principle of the pendulum. He got the inspiration while watching the oscillations of a lamp in the cathedral of Pisa. He propounded that pendulums of equal length had constant oscillation periods, i.e. the oscillations are isochronous regardless of the amplitude of the oscillation. He also visited the mathematician Christopher Clavius in Rome and started a correspondence with Guildobaldo del Monte. At the age of he invented the hydrostatic balance, which he described as an accurate balance for weighing things in air and water, which was a common method for weighing precious metals like gold during those days. He was offered a lectureship, at the University of Pisa when he was barely 25 yrs and subsequently Galileo successfully earned a name for himself as a renowned scientist and an excellent lecturer. He also obtained the chair of mathematics at the University of Padua in 1592. ... the heliocentric, or Sun-centered, system theory stating that the 'Sun is at the center of the universe, and that the Earth, spinning on its axis once daily, revolves yearly around the Sun'. Before this, astronomers believed in Ptolemy's geocentric universe theory, in which the Earth was told to be motionless at the center of several rotating spheres. Therefore there was widespread condemnation of Copernicus theory. But Galileo was the most vociferous supporter of Copernicus. Galileo became an ardent supporter of Copernicus theory when he discovered the Telescope and himself observed the sky. In 1609, Galileo set the telescope in his garden to see the Milky Way, the sky, the mountains and the valleys on the moon. In fact he was the first one to observe the moons of Jupiter and discuss the mountains on the moon. Galileo is also credited with determining the parabolic path of projectiles and calculated the law of free fall on the basis of experiments. And he started believing firmly in the theory put forward by Copernicus. He called upon people to come forward and see it themselves the composition of the celestial system around earth, but he was quite disappointed by the way people reacted to the theory of Copernicus. He expressed his anguish in a letter sent to Kepler in 1610. He wrote1, "My dear Kepler, what would you say of the learned here, who, replete with the pertinacity of the asp, have steadfastly refused to cast a glance through the telescope What shall we make of this Shall we laugh, or shall we cry" It became clear that the Copernican theory had its enemies." Based on his encounters with stars through telescope, in 1610 he published 'The Starry Messenger; and thereafter accepted a position as Mathematician and Philosopher to the Grand Duke of Tuscany

Should there be legislation for equal pay be for both men and women in Research Paper
Should there be legislation for equal pay be for both men and women in the same job - Research Paper Example These encompass long held theories regarding the female gender, sex discrimination and in some occasions hypotheses regarding womenââ¬â¢s incompetence (Coolidge 9). However, the female gender has waged defense the on basis of huge their labor that goes unpaid and unnoticed besides meager remuneration in their respective workplace (Coolidge 9). Studies contend an average female loses an approximate $420,000 in her life (Coolidge 9). This does not comprise unrecognized household chores and childbearing matter that has prompted women to lag behind in their careers (Coolidge 9). A. Women ought to receive similar remuneration considerations with men (Coolidge 9). This is regardless of either former or present notions, which corporations, statesââ¬â¢ regimes, men and society may be holding against them. Since, their contribution is similar to that of men except in various situations whereby nature exempts them from being active, for instance pregnancy. B. There should be no equal rem uneration amid the two genders. This is due to unequal contribution in the same job capacity despite the two genders having the same education or expertise. Mainly, women tend to be slow, reluctant, and not ambitious besides in certain situations excepting themselves due to pregnancy or other varied issues. II. Unequal remuneration amid the genders up to date is still evident (Drinan 18). This is regardless of numerous Acts instituted and implemented with an intention of ending gender disparity (Drinan 18). Since, the respective authorities lack effective measures meant to make adequate follow ups, mostly evident with transition of numerous regimes. For illustration, after President Carter instituting the 1980ââ¬â¢s Act, both the following leaders failed to ratify it except Bill Clinton who gave it a light implementation, hence offering insignificant contribution in ending gender disparity (Drinan 18). Consequently, studies reveal that an average woman losses approximately $420,0 00 in her lifetime (Coolidge 9). This continues to widen both sexesââ¬â¢ pay gap regardless of the developing states boasting about their stable economies (O'Beirne 29). However, other arguments contend that, there are women who earn more compared to men especially in the challenging fields, for illustration engineering. Therefore, those claiming to earn little usually venture in the less paying jobs, which entail consistency to the extent female gender cannot keep up due to their inevitable natural exemptions (childbearing issues) (Coolidge 9). In addition, Britain studies reveal a decrease in the pay gap between men and women despite unproductive measures meant to ensure adequate follow-ups (Gavin 12). However, this trend is extremely slow due to wagesââ¬â¢ stagnation especially by the low-income earners (Gavin 12). III. Womenââ¬â¢s remuneration should equal the task(s) mandated to undertake in their respective areas because this ensures gender equality among the employee s (Kiama). A. Equal pay aids corporations in avoiding gender inequality, which according studies is the leading ââ¬Å"dissatisfier'â⬠in the workplace (Kiama). 1. Approximately 48% people contended that, unfairness especially in the workplace yields to employeesââ¬â¢ demoralization. This is regardless of other varied aspects instituted by the employer to ensure good working environment (Kiama). 2. The 2010 (CIPD)ââ¬â¢

Characters in your answer Essay
à Nearer the end of the book, he deals with another situation he faces in a very childish, careless manner, showing that he just wants it over with as soon as possible, and that he doesnââ¬â¢t really care about what is happening, just about himself and his reputation. TJ is about to be hung on Granger Land, by the nightmen for shooting Jim Lee Barnett, and instead of stopping them from murdering TJ, Mr Granger simply says they have to do it on someone elseââ¬â¢s land. ââ¬Å"Mr. Granger sent word by me that he ainââ¬â¢t gonna stand for no hanging on his place. He say yââ¬â¢all touch one hair on that boyââ¬â¢s head while he on this land, heââ¬â¢s gonna hold every man here responsible. â⬠However eventually Harlan Granger does stop the hanging, to deal with a different difficulty that he is faced with, but his only true motives for this are because the Logan land is on fire and firstly he wants the land, and secondly he doesnââ¬â¢t want the fire to spread and destroy his own land. ââ¬Å"Dry as that timber is, a fire catch hold it wonââ¬â¢t stop burning for a week. Give that boy to Wade like he wants and get on up there! â⬠All in all, Harlan Grangerââ¬â¢s ways of dealing with difficulties and situations that he is faced with are not well thought out, and he only deals with them out of selfishness, or for his own reasons rather than to help others. Papa is an adult like Harlan Granger, but he too has different ways of dealing with difficulties and situations that he is faced with. Papa deals with things he more logical way. He shows braveness, and philanthropy throughout the novel, dealing with things in a way that will benefit others more than himself, if not solely for others. At the end of the book, when TJ is in trouble, Papa shows the best signs of doing all he can to help others. Even though the Logans are not well off, Papa sets fire to their cotton field, in order to distract the nightmen from hanging TJ, because he knows that they will come and try to put it out. This results in uniting the community. ââ¬Å"Papa stared out as a bolt of lightning splintered the night into a dazzling brilliance. â⬠He is clever, because like Cassie, he plans the situation before he goes through with it, working out how he can make the fire look accidental, realising that the lightning could have struck. He doesnââ¬â¢t tell a soul or admit to it, so that no harm can come to him. ââ¬Å"folks thinkinââ¬â¢ that lightning struck that fence of yours and started the fireâ⬠¦ â⬠ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s better, I think that you stay clear of this whole thing now Davidâ⬠¦ â⬠ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ Or somebody might start wondering about that fireâ⬠¦ â⬠For his final difficulty, Papa is faced with his four children asking what will become of their friend, TJ. He doesnââ¬â¢t lie to them, and yet he doesnââ¬â¢t directly answer their question when they ask if TJ could die, so he is not hurting them but they still know. ââ¬Å"I ainââ¬â¢t never lied to yââ¬â¢all, yââ¬â¢all know that. â⬠ââ¬Å"Well, Iâ⬠¦ I wish I could lie to yââ¬â¢all now. â⬠To sum up Papaââ¬â¢s character, he is very much like his daughter, calculating, clever, and planning everything, but he is much wiser, and doesnââ¬â¢t act childish. His actions usually result in helping other people, they rarely hurt people unnecessarily. He is very unlike Harlan Granger, because he doesnââ¬â¢t have his own private agenda.
