The Impact of Classical Literature on Machiavellianism Essays

Much of what we know today of Greek culture was passed on through history via The Iliad by Homer. The Greeks, one of the earliest recorded civilizations that our species is aware of, had a large influence on the Roman Empire and by extension most of the civilizations of our known history. Through history and different cultures, there are various stories of heroes and heroism, and it seems that the definition of heroism has changed frequently since classical antiquity. â€Å"Goddess, sing the rage of Peleus’s son Achilles, murderous, doomed, that cost the Achaeans countless losses.†(The Iliad I.1-2) So opens The Iliad, a story of the Trojan War and the flawed hero, Achilles. Though on different sides in the Trojan War, Diomedes and Glaucus met on the battlefield and parted as friends. Becaus e of their ancestors’ friendship, they parted peacefully, and exchanged armor in honor of their friendship, each agreeing to not fight the other for the remainder of the war. (The Iliad 6.137-27I) The heroes are also favored by some of the gods who interfere on their behalf, which has had profound effects on said these heroes and their combat strength. These virtues and their possessors indirectly led to the success in returning Achilles to the battle and turning the tide for the Achaeans. Courage and skill in oratory appear to have the most value to the Greeks. With courage, a warrior is able to charge forward and lead by example, inspiring those he commands to perform better in combat. A leader who is skilled in oratory will also have a similar effect. A rousing inspirational speech before combat can be more beneficial to a cause than having larger numbers. At the beginning of book IX, Agamemnon has lost his courage. Having been manipulated into failure by Zeus, Agamemnon orders all Achaeans to prepare to sail home in defeat. Stunned by his words, the Achaeans fall silent. Albio Sires, a New Jersey congressman, said that â€Å"Middle-class families are struggling to send their sons and daughters to school. For many Americans, a college education is essential to future success.† His statement taps into one of the biggest issues in America. While education is a strong value in this country, after high school, the percentage of people getting an education dramatically drops. Although many people choose to not go to college, there are also many people who do not go simply because they cannot afford it. Without the skill set that one acquires during these crucial years of education, many Americans then lack the skills necessary to maintain a stable middle-class job. Either, many people remain in high debt, which they are never able to pay off, or they cannot go to college at all. In fact, the financial issue with education starts with elementary school. Studies show that many lower-middle class children have a lower vocabulary earlier on, and also have behavior issues in the classroom. These issues are normally because of lower quality institutions in these communities, and because the parents cannot afford to send their children to receive a better quality education. This results in many children dropping out of high school, and not furthering their education (Sawhill, NYTimes.com). Greek Etruscan Architecture Greek and Etruscan architecture began to take shape during the Archaic and Early Classical periods. There were similarities between the early Greek and Etruscan architectural styles, but there were far more differences. One of the most obvious similarities between the Greek and Etruscan styles was the use of a gabled roof. The Tuscan order on the other hand, is a very plain design and features columns with a simple base (foundation), capital (crown of the column) and frieze (horizontal section resting on top of the capital, but below the entablature). Etruscan pillars of the Tuscan order were often made of wood and did not have flutes. Some of the other major differences between Etruscan and Greek architecture can easily be seen when comparing the Greek Parthenon to an Etruscan temple. The Parthenon features a colonnade (row of columns) and steps around the entire perimeter of the complex, while the typical Etruscan temple would have a colonnade and steps in the front of the building only. The Parthenon also featured a one-room cella with two porches. One porch would lead into the cella and the other porch would lead out of the cella. Etruscan temples featured a three room cella with only one porch in the front. The final distinction between the Parthenon and a typical Etruscan temple would be in the artistic level of detail each one was designed with. NAMES OF CHARACTERS Susie Salmon -shortened name -establishes notion of familiarity between reader and Susie -creates intimacy. It is an endearing, cute, can be connected with innocence and purity. The name highlights her age and how Susie will never grow up = sympathy. Established from very outset of book, therefore relationship established from outset -no change. Lindsey Salmon -Name never changes, it is resolute, tough, constant -like Lindsey. As the name cannot be shortened or changed, neither can the events that have taken place in her life she must learn to deal with them. Abigail Salmon -throughout the novel she undergoes an identity crisis -Susie’s death raises questions about Abigail’s identity -her name thus changes a number of times to reflect this. She is ‘Mom’, ‘Abigail’ and at one point completely nameless when she is the most confused about her actions. P42, 152, 62 For Abigail, when there is a change of name there is a change in her character. Mr. Harvey Susie refers to him as Mr. Harvey -irony as he does not deserve the title and respect. Also creates distance between him and character -reinforces his ostracism. Name is simple -contrasts to his complicated life. Name is generic anyone could be a murderer, he camouflages himself in the disguise of a generic name. Only referred to as George Harvey by Len Fernmen and in childhood flashbacks supposed to show human side to him, see him as a victim to Jack’s â€Å"mad’ accusations and sad childhood. The Lovely Bones Essay Example The Lovely Bones Paper How does Sebold use representations of speech and other literary techniques to portray the character of Grandma Lynn in the following extract and in one other extract in the novel? In The Lovely Bones, Grandma Lynn plays a key role in reconnecting the Salmon family following Susie’s death. Throughout the novel, Sebold and uses a variety of different literary techniques to portray her character to the reader. The extract is the scene where Lynn is first introduced, which Sebold uses to give a first impression of Lynn as a character, and the other extract I shall be looking at is where Sebold develops Lynn’s relationship with Lindsey, where she helps her find an outfit from Susie’s wardrobe. Sebold uses Lynn to change the mood of the family, Lynn is shown to use colloquial language when talking to her family. Lynn says that she will â€Å"just run out to the front hall and get my bag o’ magic†, the â€Å"bag o’ magic† referring to her make-up bag. Sebold shows the reader that she changes the atmosphere within the family. In contrast to this, in the other extract she tells Lindsey that Abigail is â€Å"a wreck†, as if provoking Lindsey into conversation. Sebold uses to show the reader that as well as making a scene relaxed and humorous, she also is able to use colloquial language to talk about difficult, sensitive issues with the family. Lynn is characterised by Sebold through her excessive vanity, obsessed with the idea of beauty she does not reply to Abigail’s comment regarding her looks and immediately jumps into conversation regarding Jack and his suspicions. Later in this scene she then pressurises Abigail into letting her â€Å"do a makeover†, and when Lindsey asks Lynn to teach her about makeup, Sebold shows Lynn to be rejoiced about this by saying â€Å"My God in heaven, praise the Lord, yes! †. The use of exclamatives emphasises her vanity, as the reader can see her excitement in being able to teach her granddaughter about makeup. This also shows the reader the relationship she has with her family – her daughter is reluctant to let her get anywhere near her with â€Å"those instruments of torture†, which indicates that it may have happened to her previously with disastrous consequences, however her granddaughter is willing to do undergo this, to encourage Lindsey’s transformation from a teenager into a woman. This is reiterated when Lynn helps Susie find an outfit, where Lynn attempts to find Susie a â€Å"nice outfit† from her wardrobe. The idea of looks and appearance begins to rub off on Lindsey, who says that she â€Å"needs to look pretty†, an ideology closely followed by Lynn. As soon as she is introduced she is shown to drink excessively as she says â€Å"no one has to tell me where the liquor is! † The use of exclamatives in this sentence emphasises the idea that she has visited the Salmon family before, and that she drank excessively then. This can be seen as an ‘inside joke’ between the family. However, Sebold emphasises the point that she is dependent when she says to Jack â€Å"we need some stiff drinks†. The pronoun â€Å"we† is used to draw the attention away from herself, to make it look like she isn’t the only one who wants a drink. Lynn’s lexical choices also enhance her alcoholism, as Sebold uses the adjective â€Å"stiff† to describe how she wants the drinks to be strong, to help cope with the memorial. Sebold portrays Lynn as a very dominant character through the relationships she has with her family. When talking to others she controls the conversation through the use of interrogatives and through this is able to bring up sensitive areas with the family. She asks Abigail â€Å"how is he? † when Jack has left the room, and when he returns quickly drops conversation with â€Å"but†¦Ã¢â‚¬ . This ellipsis shows the reader how, although dominative, she is also sensitive to her family and does not want to upset anybody. This is shown again in the other extract where Lynn tells Lindsey â€Å"You are pretty†, which shocks both Lindsey and Susie as Lynn rarely gives out compliments. Lynn is shown to be a very caring member of the family, despite being somewhat flawed, and the way that she impacts upon the family after she has arrived shows that she plays a key role in the novel. Through her use of colloquial language, Sebold shows us that she is able to change the atmosphere of each scene, from humorous to very serious, and the varied sentence structures that Sebold uses portrays Lynn’s views and opinions, and structures her character.

Papa is an adult like Harlan Granger, but he too has different ways of dealing with difficulties and situations that he is faced with. Papa deals with things he more logical way. He shows braveness, and philanthropy throughout the novel, dealing with things in a way that will benefit others more than himself, if not solely for others. At the end of the book, when TJ is in trouble, Papa shows the best signs of doing all he can to help others. Even though the Logans are not well off, Papa sets fire to their cotton field, in order to distract the nightmen from hanging TJ, because he knows that they will come and try to put it out. This results in uniting the community. â€Å"Papa stared out as a bolt of lightning splintered the night into a dazzling brilliance. † He is clever, because like Cassie, he plans the situation before he goes through with it, working out how he can make the fire look accidental, realising that the lightning could have struck. In The Tell-Tale Heart the idea of death is prominent. The first example is the insect chosen by the author. The butler states that, night after night, I hearkened to the death watches in the wall. In another one of Poes disturbing stories, The Masque of The Red Death, he includes symbolism to add excitement and suspicion to the story. Across all of Poes dark tales, death sticks out. The first example in, The Masque of The Red Death, is the Red Death. THE Red Death had long devastated the country. This shows that the majority of people in the kingdom were dead. A second example is the black room with the scarlett windows in the castle. But in this chamber only, the color of the windows failed to correspond with the decorations. The panes here were scarlet † a deep blood color. The room was black with blood-red windows to symbolize death. Another main idea is revenge. The first example is the Prince ignoring his subjects and the Red Death. But the Prince Prospero was happy and dauntless and sagacious. When his dominions were half depopulated This means that the Prince Prospero could care less for the poorer people in his kingdom. The second example is the Red Death taking revenge. And now was acknowledged the presence of the Red Death. He had come like a thief in the night. And one by one dropped the revellers in the blood-bedewed halls of their revel, and died each in the despairing posture of his fall. This shows that the Red Death ended up taking its revenge. Insanity is also symbolized. The first example is the Princes idea that he can escape death. All these and security were within. Without was the Red Death. This proves that the Prince believes he can avoid The Red Death. A second example is it was toward the close of the fifth or sixth month of his seclusion, and while the pestilence raged most furiously abroad, that the Prince Prospero entertained his thousand friends at a masked ball of the most unusual magnificence. This shows that the Prince had kept The Red Death out for a good amount of time, but would soon face the consequences. The Masque of The Red Death proved that death is inevitable, no matter what you do. As stated previously, Edgar Allan Poe uses symbolism in his stories to entice readers.
